The AK 5.5 – What you need in a knife, and nothing you don’t.
Dale Stoops, founder of The Knife Connection drew the design for the AK 5.5 back in 2009. As he was mowing one day, he had the thought “If I were to design an outdoor knife for bushcraft, general field use and survival, what would it be?” It was then that the first Architect Knife designs were conceived. After having been on paper for years they finally moved from paper to production.
Are you looking for the best low maintenance solution? Never worry about rust again with this premium stainless steel blade, proudly made in the USA by White River Knife & Tool. The CPM MagnaCut Stainless Steel blade features an expert “full” heat treat. The blade machining and finishing are top notch and what you would expect to see on knives costing much more. This blade is low-drag due to being uncoated, which makes slicing and food preparation chores a breeze, plus, you’ll never have to worry about a blade coating wearing off.
The blade and handle have an unconditional lifetime warranty.
The 5.5″ blade length of the AK 5.5 falls in what many would consider the “sweet spot” for a general purpose outdoor knife. The primary focus of the design is to provide versatility without sacrificing performance. The near center-line drop point tip allows the knife to perform well for piercing tasks, bushcraft tasks such as drilling and large game break-down and skinning. The high saber grind allows the blade to do an excellent job for slicing chores and bushcraft tasks such as batoning wood and other woodcraft tasks. The ample “belly” is excellent for slicing chores and skinning of large game. The thumb jimping provides a traction area when more downward force is needed and gives better blade control. The tang is skeletonized to reduce weight and provide perfect balance at the index finger position. The “crusher” pommel is very effective when blunt force is needed. A lanyard hole is provided for use if desired. The 5/32″ thick blade is stout enough for the toughest of tasks, yet the knife is light enough to easily carry. This combination has been extremely well received, with many calls and emails from customers saying the AK 5.5 is their favorite knife of all time.
We plan to offer an optional sharpened 90 degree spine on a per-order basis soon.
The engraving design communicates a generous amount of information in a minimal and clean way. This blade matched with one (or more) of our Architect® handle kits provide you with a premium knife without a premium price, giving you real value.
After contacting ESEE Knives, we carried over our existing ESEE 5/6 handle design to the AK 5.5/6.5/8 blades, providing for cross-compatibility. This is feature that offers flexibility and customization within the community, and has resulted in much positive feedback.
A matching handle kit must be purchased with a blade only product unless you have previously purchased a handle.

The AK 5.5 in 3V was already one of my fave/go-to knives. Having one in MagnaCut is the cherry on top, especially living in the humid south. MagnaCut is the perfect steel for a knife of this size and design.

I have a AK 6.5 as well and I think I like the 5.5 better for an all around blade. Carry’s on the hip nice and is a beautiful work of art. Love the fact that it is in magnacut and uncoated. Now if you are hard use all the time and need a large blade go for the 6.5 but the 5.5 will suit you either way. Love architect knives. Keep them coming

Pretty close to perfection. Quality time was spent in the design. The surprising lightweight puts a smile on your face. And adding magnacut steel is b-e-a-utiful. I have limited time abusing this blade but it’s no doubt going to stay on my favorites list.

My 5.5 CPM Magnacut Architect knife is incredible. Holding it, its a handful of beautiful cutting tool. The length, width and thickness of the blade, well you know you are holding a workhorse off a knife. The micarta scales lend to a grip that will remain firm with wet hands. The balance of the blade to handle ratio is perfect. I know it will remain comfortable in my hands no matter how hard I work it.
When Crocodile Dundee said “ That’s not a knife. That’s a knife” he might very well have been referring to my 5.5 Architect knife.

The longer I have this blade and use it every single day as an EDC with an Ulte clip in my right pocket The more I love it. You can’t fully grasp the ergonomics of it by looking at it. The handle is as small as you can get and still be comfortable in large hands. perfect for sticking out of my pocket and the blade length shape and width is as big as you can get and still fit in a pocket comfortably I might add I love to eat my salads and I use it to chop it up. Cutting my steak at Longhorn steakhouse or even deboning a chicken you can’t really grasp how awesome this blade is until you have it in hand and use it. The handle is so Perfect for doing so many different grips. I have yet to hold another knife that rivals it once you find the perfect knife to spend your life with there’s only one thing left to do get several in all the different blade steals with mycarta handles my magnacut blade weighs just a little over 9 ounces with a blade thickness just over 1/8 of an inch and because of the super steel, it has a strength of 1095 over1/ quarter inch thick all the advantages of a thick blade but super slicey

…And even a little more because I am happy to have a fixed blade that is larger than my M5 (lionsteel) while being lighter than my other fixed blades of similar size (while maintaining remarkable strength). Bravo AK

Ah, the curious case of bees and their oft-rumored knees—an expression so delightfully peculiar that it burrows into the mind like pollen dust on fuzzy legs. While people have long tossed around the phrase “the bee’s knees” to mean something excellent or delightful, rarely do they pause to ponder whether bees actually have knees, and if they do, are those knees truly deserving of such high praise? Anatomically speaking, yes, bees do possess joints between the segments of their legs, technically making those tiny hinges their knees, nestled between the femur and tibia, hidden beneath a coat of bristle and industrious purpose. But more interestingly, perhaps, is the image one gets when imagining bees kneeling in microscopic reverence, or lounging about on bar stools in their little hives, their knees crossed as they discuss the day’s foraging drama over nectar-tinis. It’s a strange flight of fancy, but then again, life’s a bit sweeter when you let your imagination buzz wherever it pleases.
This blade is that – the proverbial Bee’s Knees!

This is a very well designed blade. The drop point and high saber grind work well together for all outdoor uses. The blade height and thickness make this a strong yet precise cutting tool. It is strong enough to baton yet thin enough to prepare food. Since the blade spine is not 90 degrees it is very comfortable to use for extended periods of time.
I think the jimping is a little sharper than it needs to be and I wish the tang did not have the cut outs.
Other than that I think this is a perfect blade.

A true all-rounder. Blade is versatile being both slicey and robust enough for anything I would do with it. The jumping is too deep and sharp for my taste. The spine isn’t 90 degree but I don’t tend to use my knives on fire steels. Came perfectly sharp and symmetrical in the grinding. The handle is a great shape, plenty of girth for a good grip and long enough for a useful variety of grips. The Kydex sheath is an excellent fit with good retention, the lock is simple and effective, as is the leather backer – glad I chose that mounting option, I like the leather better than webbing that others like Lionsteel use. What’s not perfect? The screws sink into the micarta a bit too much so there are raised edges around 5 of the 6 the screwholes. These are somewhat square edged so they do rub on the palm and fingers and with longer use I’m sure will cause hotspots. It seems to me that the milling on the micarta is a bit too deep so I can’t tighten the screws up to secure the handle without leaving these irritating recesses (yes I’m using the correct spacers in each hole). Don’t know if my handle is typical as I didn’t read any other reviews with similar comments? All in, great value and service from AK. I would certainly buy again from this company.

Extremely comfortable and nimble for 5.5 inches. I like this company and the array of options. The owner was very considerate when responding to my question.

Architect delivers with a great knife, knife steel, scales selection and sheath accessories. The blade shape and high saber grind are excellent, and the selection of scale material and colors is great.
The nice thing is you get the “kit” and assemble the scales onto the knife! I like this way to keep the cost down and not delivering the knife in a special container that many might throw away or lose.

I enjoy owning knives in a variety of steels, and most models I have in three different steels. So the AK 5.5 in magna cut is a very welcome addition to the collection. Leather sheath provides adequate sheath retention at this point, but already showing signs of loosening. Overall, a happy camper!

It appears to be an excellent knife and I love there method of customizing. Package comes with all the parts separate and I just put it together. It is a cool business model. I have not gotten a chance to beat it around yet so reserving judgement on the knife as a whole but it has a nice edge and quality looks excellent.
