Frequently Asked Questions
Which sharpener should I carry with me for bushcraft?
Knife sharpening equipment, like everything else in the world of bushcraft, is super personal. Everyone’s got their reasons for every choice they make! That said, we have our favorites based on portability, practicality, and ease of use in the field. And those are the attributes you should be looking for.
How important is it to carry knife sharpening tools in the bush?
Did you know that the sharper your knife is, the safer it is? For starters, a sharp knife commands reverent care in handling. A sharp knife is also better at doing what it’s there to do, without the need to exert undue pressure in wilderness situations. That undue pressure can cause accidents you don’t need to happen out there.
Can I use a wet leather strop to sharpen my knife?
If your leather strop gets wet in the bush, it’s not going to get you the result you need to use your knife safely (as discussed above). To keep your leather strop dry, carry it in a waterproof case in a safe compartment in your gear. A dry strop is an effective strop, just as a sharp knife is a safe knife.
