This new app will offer a much more accessible version of the game that is appropriate for mobile platforms like Google Play and the Apple App Store. NU: Carnival launched in 2022 on EroLabs to much critical acclaim, with many praising the game’s inclusion of uncensored sexual content. Since its release it has maintained strong fandom online, inspiring art, fanfiction, and several thriving communities.

However, the news of the SFW version has garnered mixed response from the fandom, with many fans of the game flooding NU: Carnival official accounts with criticisms and concerns about the decision. It’s definitely an interesting choice given the explicit and erotic nature of the game, namely the unlockable uncensored H-scenes.

NU Carnival Story

Long ago, to calm the elemental spirits causing chaos across the Klein Continent, Grand Sorcerer Huey placed elemental gemstones capable of regulating nature in five altars, protecting them with magic seals. Every decade, Huey would take his clan members to visit the altars to maintain the gemstones. However, twenty years ago, Huey vanished. With no one to regulate the gemstones, the equilibrium was slowly lost, leading to natural disasters and the spread of the Dead Zone. That’s when Huey’s familiars summoned the main character from another world: Eiden.

Following his arrival on the Klein Continent, Eiden assumes the mission of the vanished Grand Sorcerer. He learns to regulate his essence—similar to Huey’s—and engages in “intimate exchanges” with the clan members—trying to grasp essence—to release the seal of the neon gemstone and restore its power.

The NU: Carnival team has been forthcoming with FAQs to assuage some of the fandom’s concerns, but information about Bliss is still forthcoming.

From the Official NU: Carnival Instagram

Possible reasons for the creation of NU: Carnival Bliss stem from strict censorship laws in many countries that make it difficult to market a game with explicit content. On top of that the app stores have been notoriously firm in their stance against 18+ content, so this new SFW version will make NU: Carnival more accessible to a larger audience. From a business standpoint this is a definite positive for the team behind the popular game as it will open up new revenue streams.

It will also broaden the fanbase of the game, possibly ushering in more opportunities for awareness of boys love media down the line or even better other types of content, like a manga or an anime.

Concerns About Adapting the Explicit Content for the SFW Version

As far as adapting NU: Carnival to be more accessible to an all ages audience, we’ve seen publishers like JAST Blue and Mangagamer release both R18 and 16+/All ages versions of their more explicit titles to comply with stringent Steam censorship protocols. This isn’t a new practice. However, the quality of the SFW versions varies between titles. For example, the All ages version of Dramatical Murder remained largely intact even with the cutting of the sexual content, but the same cannot be said for the all ages version of Sweet Pool, which was almost unplayable without the context of the explicit content.

Outside of the generic gacha gameplay style, the sexual content in NU: Carnival is a large part of the appeal of the game. So, cutting that out or even reworking it could diminish the shine of what makes the NU: Carnival experience worthwhile. Let’s face it the majority of us are playing NU: Carnival for the p*rn, not the plot.

There is also concern with how the team plans to maintain both versions of the game. Will both versions be worked on by the same team or will there be two separate teams working on each project. How will this effect events and new content for the adult version moving forward? The SFW version? Will the team be able to work on both versions without sacrificing the quality of both experiences. These are very real concerns from gamers like myself who have come to enjoy the content of the existing version.

To a lessor extent there is the concern that individuals wanting to experience the 100% SFW version of the game, may unwittingly stumbling onto the NSFW content that has been created around NU: Carnival in the year and a half since its release. To be clear I’m referring to the considerable fan content and not the R18 version of the game (which let’s be honest was a pain in the ass to setup in and of itself). If someone wants to go through the effort of downloading the apk and getting it to work, power to them.

But, the concern that that minors may be introduced to the R18 version by mistake is a possibility. As someone who engaged with the BL fandom in high school the accessibility of the internet made it easy to get my hand on a lot of content I had no business viewing. Which can lead to issues for the NU: Carnival team down the line.

This is still new and the team will continue to reveal more about NU: Carnival Bliss in the coming days and weeks leading up to the release. I’ll be keeping an eye on updates, but in the meantime, here is the trailer and the available social media platforms for NU: Carnival Bliss.
