Promotion to Master Sergeant.

Technical Sergeants may be promotion eligible to Master Sergeant upon completion of eight years of time in service and 24 months of time in grade. The PECD for promotion to Master Sergeant is 30 November. The test cycle is February - March.

According to federal law, no more than 2.5% of an enlisted military force may hold the rank of E-8 at a time.

Promotion to senior master sergeant is the most difficult enlisted promotion to attain in the Air Force and Space Force. It is the second enlisted grade in which results of a central promotion board is the only factor in selection for promotion.

Air Force officials have selected 1,734 master sergeants for promotion to senior master sergeant out of 15,151 eligible for a selection rate of 11.44 percent in the 24E8 promotion cycle, which includes supplemental promotion opportunities. The average overall score for those selected was 398.97.

E-8 Senior Master Sergeant - U.S. Air Force Ranks

Senior Master Sergeant (SMSgt) is the fourth Non-Commissioned Officer rank in the United States Air Force. It is just above Master Sergeant and below Chief Master Sergeant.

Service members of ranks airman basic through airman 1st class may stay in for 10 years without promotion before they're forced out of the Air Force, senior airmen have 12 years, staff sergeants 22 years, technical sergeants 24 years, master sergeants 26 years and senior master sergeants 28 years.

10 U.S. Code § 631, § 632: O2s, O3s, and O4s (other than Navy and Marine Corps Limited Duty Officers) who have twice failed for promotion shall be discharged. If eligible for retirement, that officer is retired. If retirement eligibility is within 2 years, that officer is retained until eligible and then retired.

How hard is it to make E-8 in the Air Force? ›

The next rank up is Senior Master Sergeant (E-8) and it is very difficult and highly competitive to get this promotion, as many public laws only allow 2% of the Air Force workforce to be in grade E-8. To be eligible for promotion to this rank, you'll need 11 years of service and 20 months in your previous grade.

All told, E-8s and E-9s have 15 to 30 years on the job, and are commanders' senior advisers for enlisted matters. A third E-9 element is the senior enlisted person of each service.

Moving up the Air Force Ranks: Promotion to staff sergeant requires three years of time in serve (TIS) and six months of time in grade (TIG). In addition, airmen must achieve a 5-skill level, compete in WAPS and complete the Airman Leadership School in-residence before assuming the rank of staff sergeant.

The Air Force announced its chief master sergeant promotion statistics for 2022, and the Space Force announced E-8 and E-9 promotions.

The Air Force's selection rate for promotions to technical sergeant neared 20 percent in 2024, bouncing back from historically low rates the previous two years while still trailing the highs of the late 2010s.
